April 2024: Skincare and Make-up Empties (Function of Beauty, Go-To and More!)

I thought it could be fun to do a post on my skincare and make-up empties before I take them to Priceline to be recycled (find out more here/not sponsored). I have combination skin, leaning more towards oily.

So, I'm going to ask myself three important questions:
1. Would I use it again?
2. Would I recommend it?
3. Would I buy it again?

Note: Some products mentioned aren't pictured above. Not sponsored.
Also note: Just because the products did/didn't work for me, doesn't mean the same for you.

drmtlgy Hydra-Fader

1. Would I use it again? Yes, in fact, this is my second or third bottle. After finishing my first bottle I decided I couldn't see a real difference in my skin, but I did once I stopped using it (realising now that some products do take a while to show results too), so I repurchased. I love the light gel consistency and that it is fragrance free.

2. Would I recommend it? Yes, if you're looking at fading dark spots and helping hyperpigmentation. Just note that the effects are subtle at first, but I found it useful.

3. Would I buy it again? Yes. But I never buy drmtlgy products unless they're at 30% off. At minimum you can always get 25% off so don't buy at face value. I would always recommend drmtlgy products - they're my favourite. I love too that their skincare quiz doesn't recommend their entire collection like others do - you can choose between 1-7 products - so it makes me feel like they care more than other companies.

Redwin Sorbolene Moisuriser

1. Would I use it again? Yes. I plan on repurchasing.

2. Would I recommend it? Yes, I love a multi-purpose product. It has a range of benefits including as hand cream or shaving cream, helping with nappy rash, skin rashes and sunburn, and make up removal so is perfect on vacation as well as every day. The price is great too!

3. Would I buy it again? I certainly would.

-

Kiehl's Calendula Herbal-Extract Toner

1. Would I use it again? Yes. I actually hadn't realised the purpose of a toner until I started using this product. It was a sample and I'm sad that I finished it. I double toned every week after cleansing in the shower.

2. Would I recommend it? Yes, while I'm not an expert on toners, I really liked this one. Like I said above, it's the first time I've actually understood the point and purpose of a toner. This one is best for normal to oily skin, but they have other options on their website.

3. Would I buy it? If I thought I needed more x in my skincare and the only way to get it was through a toner then I absolutely would. But saying that, I still don't think a toner is necessary in my skincare routine. I like to keep my routine minimal and I'm unsure if I want to add a toner into it. Perhaps one day. Kiehl's is quite expensive but as far as toner's go, I would buy it again if I thought I needed it.

Function of Beauty Shampoo and Conditioner

1. Would I use it again? Yes, I would but I probably won't. This is actually my second bottles of shampoo and conditioner. I choose a different formula the second time, but I preferred my first (I can't remember the differences, but I did go from long hair to short hair to long hair while using them). Towards the end I used the remainder of my shampoo to clean my hairbrushes, and the conditioner I used as shaving cream (it works REALLY well), so I think that says a lot about that second formula. My hair tended to frizz with the second formula (I'm guessing due to the volumnising, but can't be sure).

2. Would I recommend it? No, I think you can find better options for the same price, but it is fun to customise your formula/bottles. If you're keen on trying it though, I would wait for a sale.

3. Would I buy it again? If it was the best shampoo and conditioner I ever used then I wouldn't hesitate, especially with its higher price tag, but I don't think it was for me. Ironically my current shampoo and conditioner cost more than Function of Beauty but I like it better.

Mirenesse Secret Weapon 24 Hour Mascara

1. Would I use it again? Yes, it is my go-to mascara. I've used it for years.

2. Would I recommend it? Yes. I think Mirenesse were at the forefront of tube mascara, so I'd guess another company does it now for cheaper. While I think it's worth the price, it won't be for everyone.

3. Would I buy it again? Yes, I always do :)

-

Australis Fresh & Flawless Pressed Powder

1. Would I use it again? Yes, I've lost count how many times I've bought/used it.

2. Would I recommend it? Yes. If you're looking for an affordable pressed powder that doesn't go everywhere than yes. It lasts a while too. I always buy it when on sale (40-50%) at Priceline. My only criticism is that towards the end, the product tends to break and turns into a loose powder than a pressed powder which can be frustrating. It's still my favourite though.

3. Would I buy it again? Yes. I bought it again last month. I use the colour Neutral and can be a real pain to buy as it's often out of stock because it's a popular colour.

Sundae Coconut Cream Foaming Body Wash

1. Would I use it again? No. My sister bought me the gingerbread body wash for Christmas and my Mum the coconut cream one. She prefers bar soap so when I finished my gingerbread one she gave me her coconut cream one to try as she wasn't using it. And I cannot stress how much I hate the smell of it. To me, it smells of off coconut. I also dislike the texture and find the nozzle misfunctions with repeat use.

2. Would I recommend it? No. I'm sure some people prefer foaming body washes, but I am not one of them. If you do, I wouldn't recommend the coconut cream scent. The gingerbread one was nice but faded quickly.

3. Would I buy it? No. I prefer a shower gel and Sundae is also too expensive for me.

Go-To Very Useful Face Cream

1. Would I use it again? Yes. I've used it many times and it's a nice moisuriser, light and absorbs quickly. I also think, from memory, it's fragrance free which I prefer. I actually stopped using this for a long time and it ended up turning bad (clumpy, yellow and oil separating from the cream) but that's on me...

2. Would I recommend it? Yes. I have still moved on to using drmtlgy just because I wanted to try something else (I hesitate to stay better as preference varies, but I think drmtlgy has produced better results for me personally being medical grade). But as far as products/brands go, I think it's a good one.

3. Would I buy it again? Yes. For the moment however, I'm going to stick with drmtlgy.

Kiehl's Midnight Recovery Omega-Rich Cloud Cream

1. Would I use it again? No. I hated the smell. As someone who is sensitive to strong smelling fragrances, I hated using it. I was gifted a small sample and I wanted to give it a fair shot, but it was painful to get through it.

2. Would I recommend it? No. I have no positives. There were many times that I put it on and then automatically took it off because my skin felt irritated and itchy.

3. Would I buy it? No, not including the smell but the thickness of the cream was also off putting to me. I prefer a light cream and this one was quite heavy, sticky and tacky-like.

-

The Body Shop Hemp Lip Conditioner

1. Would I use it again? No. I hated the smell, feel and taste of the product. I'm not the biggest fan of lip products anyway but it was off putting to me.

2. Would I recommend it? No, it didn't work for me, but it did moisurise nicely.

3. Would I buy it again? I would not.

-

Blistex Ultra Lip Balm

1. Would I use it again? Yes. I liked the texture but not the taste. It was minor compared to The Body Shop one, however. I bought this for my trip to Malaysia and it served its purpose of a high SPF.

2. Would I recommend it? Yes, I thought it was a good product.

3. Would I buy it again? Yes, but I would like to look into its product list as I'm not sure if it's the best product out there for me - especially not liking lip products, I should experiment a little.

-

Kiehl's Midnight Recovery Concentrate

1. Would I use it again? No. This again was a sample given to me and I hated it. I'm unsure what its benefits are but I didn't like the smell and it made my skin itchy.

2. Would I recommend it? No.

3. Would I buy it? Definitely not.

-

SK-II Stempower Rich Cream

1. Would I use it again? This was another sample that I was gifted. I liked the cooling nature as well as the lightness of the cream. I would use it again.

2. Would I recommend it? Yes, I think long term use would produce good benefits.

3. Would I buy it? Sadly, it is out of my price range, but I would given a sale, especially with all the good reviews.

-

Eau Thermale Avene A-Oxitive Smoothing Water Cream

1. Would I use it again? This was another sample, and I would use it again. It was so nice when my face was feeling burnt or hot. It was very cooling.

2. Would I recommend it? Yes. It was very light and cooling.

3. Would I buy it? No. Although I liked it, I don't have much use for it. It would just be another product in my collection that would be barely used.

-

Eau Thermale Avene A-Oxitive Serum

1. Would I use it again? Yes. While I didn't like it as much as the smoothing water cream, I liked the product overall.

2. Would I recommend it? Given the size of the sample, I can't really say either way.

3. Would I buy it? No as I prefer my other serums.

-

In conclusion, the products I 100% see myself buying again are drmtlgy's hydra-fader, Mirenesse Secret Weapon 24 Hour Mascara and the Australis Fresh & Flawless Pressed Powder

I would consider the Kiehl's Calendula Herbal-Extract Toner, Redwin Sorbolene Moisuriser, Go-To Very Useful Face Cream and the Blistex Ultra Lip Balm.

For the moment, my skincare routine consists of five products - cleanser/SPF moisuriser in the morning and cleanser/serum/moisuriser in the evening. Occasionally I will use a lip product and foot scrub.
