LOVE: Engineered Lace Shift by Portmans

Because of all the upcoming weddings that I have to attend, I'm constantly trying to find a dress I like instores and online - or something from my wardrobe - but because I like buying new things, I tend to look anyway :)

This Engineered Lace Shift by Portmans has caught my eye. It's nothing like what I was going for but the detail on the dress is very unique and pretty. It looks very delicate and well constructed too. I will have to go in the shop and see if I love it enough to spend the $119 price tag ... but as the weddings are a while away, I might just wait and see if it goes on sale and then maybe, just maybe, I can stop looking for that perfect wedding dress.

EVENT: 2012 84th Oscar Academy Awards

I always have trouble watching the Academy Awards. I'm not one of those people who find it boring - I actually enjoy watching them. But the problem is always that a lot of the movies nominated haven't been released in Australia yet - so you're either spoiled by the clips or you just don't know what all the fuss is about. And well, unless you watch it live, it's very hard not to find out the results ahead of time because they'll announce it on the radio, tv etc without warning you beforehand.

Still it was a good night. I'm a fan of Cirque Du Soleil and excited to see their performance - and they didn't disappoint. Esperanza Spalding rendition of 'What A Wonderful World' for the 'in memoriam' segment was beautiful.

And let's not forget the fashion. White. White. White. seems to be all the rage this year. And actually, my favourite three looks were all in white. Octavia Spencer, Milla Jovovich and Giuliana Rancic. I only wish Giuliana had worn her hair in a pony tail - because I think the bun ages her. I really liked the belt on Sandra Bullock's Marchesa gown but there was something a bit of a miss about it.

I thought Meryl Streep very graceful in her gold Lanvin frock. I thought Glenn Close looked very chic for choosing a forest green dress with matching blazer. It seems that Natalie Portmans' gown has people divided but I loved the texture in the dress. It wasn't my favourite look of hers but the texture saves it for me. I also liked the beautiful tones in the gowns worn by Sarah Hyland and Penelope Cruz.

I'm not a big fan of Jonah Hill - I always think back to his early comedies, ugh! - but he looked a peach. And it was so sweet of him to take his Mum. I had some friends meet him last year when they were in LA. They said that he was very sweet so I have respect for him being so down to Earth - at least around them ... Robert Downey Jr was a close second.

My favourite for Best Dressed Couple was George Clooney and Stacey Keilbler. Hands down, no comparison. Kenneth Branagh wins my spunk of the night award! He looked much younger than his 51 years.

LOVE: Carnaby Cape by Junk

How amazing is this Carnaby Cape by Junk?! The colour is gorgeous! It reminds me a little of the Wool Cape and the California Fleece Cape by American Apparel but I prefer the buttons and the sleeve detail on this one. It takes the look of Little Red Riding Hood and brings it into the 21st century. Love!

If you're thinking it looks familiar, it's because Junk has released it before and it completely sold out! It's currently being sold for pre-order at Freez for $99 - get it quick before it's gone! =D

EVENT: The Birthday Project by Bonds

The Birthday Project for Bonds went live yesterday. My computer was being a total bitch and I didn't want to share it until I could claim my birthday first before anybody could have it - it's slightly evil of me, yes, but I wasn't going to miss the chance of getting my birthday first teehee.

Australian fashion brand Bonds has been around since 1915 and to celebrate they are looking to have one person represent each one of those 35,301 days. The first 15,000 entries to be the first to claim their birthdate on their website will recieve a tshirt with the words 'I am (birthdate)'. So for example, if your birthday was today, your tshirt would read 'I am 29/02/2012'. (Although, you have to be at least 1 to register to claiming that day would be impossible)

Good luck! But don't worry if you're not the first, multiple people can claim the same date :)

EVENT: LMFF aka L'Oreal Melbourne Fashion Festival

I'm too excited to share the news! I can now officially announce that I will be working at L'Oreal Melbourne Fashion Festival this March. I can't tell you what I'm doing, when I'm doing it or any other details. It's all very exciting but it's all very hush hush and I'm sworn to secrecy to not share any information lol. This goes for before and after the festival - sorry.

But doesn't mean that I can't share any official photos once they are released :) Which I definitely will - promise.

For now, here are some preview videos to get you excited.

EVENT: A Chorus Line

I've been meaning to do this post for a while but time, I'm afraid, hasn't been on my side and I only just now have time to write it.

But two Friday's ago, I was lucky enough to go and see A Chorus Line on stage. I hadn't seen any previews and had no idea what it was about - but as I've been a fan of the theatre since I was child, how could I refuse a chance to go?

It's not to say that I was disappointed with the show. Not at all, infact, I very much enjoyed it. But it wasn't my favourite - and I think the main reason why is the lack of sets and costumes. Obviously I know now that it's about people auditioning for a show so costume changes would be silly and unnecessary - but I didn't know that going in. The set is a dance studio and the only thing that changes is the background - from a plain colour, to panelled mirrors to the fancy background at the end. The end number was also was the only time when all the performers changed costumes to perform 'One' - And I still have no idea how they all managed to change into those costumes so fast!!

But dispite the lack of costumes and sets, it was a very funny show - particually Sheila and Richie. And the "bad" auditions at the beginning were also very funny - especially the guy who kept his head down and Sheila smiling as she's dancing.

I think another reason, for me personally, was the whole concept of the musical. I always tend to loose interest when it comes to back stories. In TV shows like Lost or Alcatraz, my mind tends to wander when they have flashbacks - and it was the same with this. I cared more about who was going to make the audition rather than know their life stories. It makes me loose interest very fast because I have a problem with most stories when we already know the outcome. In A Chorus Line, they are auditioning to become part of the Chorus in a show so we learn why they are auditioning - but, for me, I know they are auditioning and I don't care why - I only want to know who makes it. It's just my own personal opinion. Let's just say, it's the reason I can't really appreciate The Rise of the Planet of the Apes (we already know the Apes take over), Smallville (become Superman already ...) and don't even get me started on the Batman movies.

Also I do think Paul's story went too long. It was just him standing on stage talking. It was also sometimes hard to understand what some of the performers were singing when the music was very loud. But I always prefered the back story in song - it was much more entertaining than just standing on stage and speaking. Also the singing usually meant that there would also be dancing. And the dancing was amazing! Especially when all the perfromers were dancing in unison.

My favourite song was the 'tits and ass' song - I know that's not what it's called but it was very funny to me - and I hadn't expected it to be so crude. Also, hugs to the guy who got gonorrhea - that was too funny! I also enjoyed 'Sing' - it was very well done. 'I Hope I Get It' is a classic! I loved the performance of 'One' at the end. It was amazing and probably my favourite song/dance by all the performers. Who won the chance to be in the chorus was overshadowed by the final number - but I guess it doesn't really matter. The essence of the show is the how and why they are auditioning and not the end result itself. And to be honest, I don't even remember who made it and who didn't.

All up, I think it was a really good show with very solid performances. And as I've said, it wasn't my favourite for the reasons I mentioned above, but it is worth a look if you get the opportunity to go. And truth be told, I would actually see it again :)

Next up, I'm seeing Annie in June. x

EVENT: Sam Neill on Twitter

Since as long as I can remember, I've always preferred older guys and I don't just mean a couple of years older - I mean a lot older. Not to say that I don't like guys my age or younger - but I always tend to fall harder for the older ones ... sometimes even more than twice my age. I'm 26 so 42+ (You can eww if you want but I can't help who I find attractive just as much as you can. I'm used to the ewws, the weird looks and insults I receive when I tell people).

And for as long as I can remember, I've had a crush on Sam Neill. There's something about him that I've always found attractive and I can't pinpoint what that is - I guess it's everything?

But anyway, two days ago I somehow stumbled upon the fact that Sam Neill has twitter (@twopaddocks for those who want to follow him). This morning I checked my email and there was an email saying that Sam Neill wanted to follow me!!! Okay .. okay ... so I know that he follows practically everyone that follows him - but considering how far back my crush goes - I'm pretty damn excited! Nothing can bring me down today for sure! *sigh*

LOVE: Nice Cushy by Typo

How adorable is this Nice Cushy by Typo?!

I'm currently re-decorating my room and as a hoarder, it's incredibly hard to say goodbye to all the clutter around my room. Still, I know it's for the best - but it's just so hard. I'm cheating a little by keeping many boxes of old stuff in my walk in wardrobe. I could probably rent out a whole storage garage with all the stuff that is in there.

So the question is, should I buy this pillow and store it for when I can afford to get my own place. I've always thought I'd decorate my lounge room area in pink, white and brown - but now I'm thinking maybe more of a black and white theme to go with what I have. The black/white theme is in total contrast to what I want to do with my bedroom. I want to have very dark walls and dark brown woods.

I also want one a stabbed man knife holder - I love those!

NEW: Necklaces by Lovisa

I took full advantage of the 3 for 2 promotion at Lovisa yesterday and bought these two necklaces (I let my friend pick the freebie because I couldn't find a third item that I wanted). I'm very happy with my choices and - weather pending - will probably wear the gold one at my friend's birthday this Saturday night. #excited

LOVE: Rabbits Love To Read Tshirt by So Sooki

via Frock You

I am in love with this tshirt so much but as it's for children, I somehow don't think I'll be able to squeeze my way into it. Do you think it's too girly for my cousin's two month old son Jackson? Surely he won't grow up hating me if I buy it for him lol.

INSPIRE: Mallory Dress Flint by Acne

I had a moment of excitement when I found this Mallory Dress by Acne on Incu the other day. My name isn't very common in Australia so any mention of the name is pretty rare. So you can imagine how super excited that this dress shares my name. At $339 it's just a little out of my price range - but I thought it deserves to be featured on the blog anyway :)

TREND: Aztec Prints

I'm loving the Aztec trend at the moment - especially the prints with the vibrant orange colour in them. I'm also liking the very similar Mexican prints. I just saw ASOS feature the trend so I wonder when Australia will jump on the bandwagon ... if at all ... although, it would be a great trend for the upcoming Autumn weather. The orange and browns just scream 'Fall' - Don't you think?

ARTICLE: Dressing for a Wedding

I have two weddings to attend - one this year and another next year. I'm unsure if I want to buy a new dress or just wear something already in my wardrobe. I was just going to post some dresses that I was considering buying/trying on but I thought that maybe some other ladies are in the same boat as me - you want a dress but you don't necessarily know what you want or what to look for. So here are some of my general rules when it comes to dressing for weddings.

LENGTH
- don't wear anything too short. Short dresses are okay but avoid mini styles or anything that will be uncomfortably short when you sit down. Such as this Princess Polly Mistletoe Dress. Stick to lengths just above the knee to the full maxi lengths. I wouldn't recommend wearing anything shorter than the Seduce Colour Block Twist Front Dress. If you do opt for a mini-dress, wear it with tights.

CUT OUTS
- don't wear anything too revealing such as Reverse Dress in Scratch Print with Cut Out Bustier. Most likely older people and children will be present so you don't want to cause unwanted attention. If you do want to show some extra skin, opt for a low back such as this Warehouse Low Back Dress. It's a little sexy without being inappropriate or offending anybody.

BLACK vs COLOUR
- there's that old rule that you shouldn't wear black to a wedding. Now, I know a little black dress is a classic style but why wear black when you can wear colour? Although this ASOS Mesh Skater Dress With Twist Front is cute - I'd suggest something with colour such as this Sheike Unbreakable Dress. It's a wedding after all, not a funeral. Also, don't wear white - no exceptions, just don't!

GREEN
- Traditionally wearing green to a wedding is supposed to be bad luck (Forever New Olivia Cross Over Bandage Dress) ... I don't have a problem with wearing green but just in case you're superstitious, stick to more blue/green shades like teal, aqua, sea green etc like this Sheike Pacific Dress.

PRINTS
- don't go for a loud print. Prints can look lovely but you don't want a print that takes focus away from the bride. Prints like this ASOS Reverse Midi Open Back Dress In Colour Splash will get all the wrong attention. Florals or more basic patterns are always better like this Gorman Rumba Tulip Dress

VERSATILITY
- if you have to buy a dress, buy one that you will/can wear again. Long silk maxi dresses (Sheike Evie Satin Maxi) are lovely but if you're looking at a high price tag for one event - it's not advisable. Why do you think celebrities borrow dresses for events? Otherwise, I'd suggest something like Motel Midi Zoe Dress in Abstract Pebble Print which can be worn for a special event, drinks with the girls, dinner parties or with a blazer at the office.

SEQUINS
- a lot of people will say that sequins are inappropriate for a wedding but I disagree. I think sequins can be tastefully done. Just avoid all over sequin dresses like this Freez Bebe Diamond Dress. Look for subtle hints of sequins or glitter, sequin bodices or jewelled details. Such as TFNC Babydoll Dress with Sequin Bodice.

LACE
- lace is such a beautiful idea for a wedding. If you spend a lot of money on a lace dress, it'll be an investment piece because lace never goes out of style and can be worn again and again. Wearing lace with your bra, bralett or crop top has been fashionable as of late such as this Princess Polly Judy Barton Dress - but it's not appropriate for a wedding. Add a slip if it doesn't have built in underlay like this Portmans Bronze Lace Dress.

FITTED
- there's a difference between tight and fitted - and a lot of people forget that and that's why often, fitted clothes have the bad rep. Fitted clothing isn't just for a size 6. You just need to know how to make tight clothes work for you. I'm not suggesting any kind of shapewear - although, I do think it's a great idea if you want a smoother look. The key to fitted clothing is all in the material. I'd suggest something like this
Motel Zoe Racer Dress Stripes for a smaller size as it will be less forgiving than this Forever New Bandage Dress. Larger lady should go for fitted styles that skim over your curves, rather than cling to them - stiffer fabrics are your friend.

Furthermore.
  • If it's a bit chilly, wear tights as apposed to leggings - if you're wearing black shoes wear black tights - otherwise wear nude tights.
  • A wedge is a nice alternative to a heel - they are usually more comfortable and will stop you sinking into the sand and/or grass.
  • If you'd rather wear flats, go for a dressed up sandal or ballet flat. Shades of silver or gold or bejewelled styles.
  • If it's a themed wedding and you're asked to dress up - do it. You will look out of place otherwise. Besides, it's the couple's special day and what they say, goes :)
  • If you don't like your arms but you want to wear a strapless dress, a bolero is a great cover up instead of a heavy jacket.
  • Colour blocking works well for a wedding. Just make sure that it's tasteful. Don't wear more than three solid colours unless in a print.
  • You don't have to spend a lot of money on an outfit. A lot of dresses can look really expensive if you wear it with the right accessories. When I've worn this ASOS dress with a chunky statement faux diamond necklace or sparkly dangle earrings, I've been complimented on how dressed up and expensive I look.
  • If you are looking for something more traditionally formal that you will probably only wear once, I'd suggest borrowing from a friend, renting a dress online at Dressed Up or waiting for a sale - you'll feel less guilty about how much you're spending. And let's face it with new shoes, make up, jewellery, transportation, presents etc it can add up fast! Any way to save some pennies is a great idea!
  • Basic make up works best at a wedding. If you're wearing a lot of colours, keep your make up fresh and natural. Coloured eye shadow is okay but then wear nude lips. Red lips work if you keep your eye shadow neutral. Depends on the wedding, the time of day and the location. But just remember, if it's a long day, you want your make up to last. I don't recommend a heavy smokey eye if you're likely to have panda eyes by the end of the night. Stay classy or you'll regret it later.
  • When choosing a bag, make sure it's big enough to carry your keys, money, tissues, ID, camera, phone, spare shoes (if you think you'll need them when you're on your way home) and make up for touch ups.
  • Smaller prints are always more flattering. Larger bags make your appear smaller. Vertical stripes are always more flattering than horizontal stripes.
  • Consider if your dress will need to be altered. You may think that dress that you bought is cheap - but altering a dress can add up. It might be cheaped just to buy a different dress instead.
  • If you think your dress is too plain, add some bling such as sparkly jewellery, a nice clutch, glitzy heels and/or a beaded, faux fur or sequined crop jacket or bolero.
  • If you'd prefer to wear a skirt and top instead of a dress - a satin or silk cami with a pencil skirt will look nice. If you'd prefer to wear pants - black pants with a jewel coloured top will also look nice.
  • And remember, you no longer have to match your bag and shoes (although you still can if you want to)
  • Remember this is just a guide. Wear what you feel comfortable in, what suits your body shape and wear your best colour/colours.

LOVE: Saphite Boots by Wittner

I think I did the quickest shop of my life today! I was walking around like a maniac because I had limited time. I even forgot to go to Dusk - grr - but these Saphite Emerald Suede Boots by Wittner caught my eye from afar. But now, having looked on the website, I think I prefer the Saphite Winterberry Suede instead. But ... I promised myself that I wouldn't buy anymore shoes - damn! I'm 99% sure that they are also real leather - so woohoo! my conscience won't let me buy them anyway. (I'm anti-leather, anti-fur etc etc you get the picture.) Money saved!

I also didn't end up buying anything - but Lovisa does have the necklace that I want so I must remember to go back there next week sometime and buy it before I miss my chance.

Enjoy your weekend everybody!

LOVE: Palermo Blouse by Bardot

Palermo Blouse by Bardot

I adore the buttons on the sleeves. It's such a cute look to update an old trend. I also can't go past the gorgeous vibrant red colour of this blouse. I must check it out and see if it's true to this colour instore! I'll try to make it to the shops tomorrow :)

Tonight, I'll be wearing my oversized knit top and faux leather skirt, in my last 'new' post, to a very special event tonight. Full details to follow this weekend. Anywho, must start getting ready. It's hard to know what to wear in this weather - sticky hot one minute then breezy the next ...
