EVENT: London Musicals Ranked (Plus A Show From Liverpool Too!)

 I was recently in London and managed twelve musicals in eight days – and believe me, I would have seen more had I could (the lack of Monday matinee was frustrating). The additional purpose of my trip was to attend the Eurovision Song Contest in Liverpool, and I managed to see a musical while I was there too.

I thought, considering many of these are currently still playing, that it would be fun to rank the musicals I saw from worst to best. Note, none were bad, but something has to come last.

EVENT: The Phantom of the Opera (2022)

The Phantom of the Opera has come to Melbourne’s State Theatre, The Art Centre – and you’d be hard pressed to find someone who hasn’t heard of the Andrew Lloyd Webber classic, let alone someone who didn’t rank it in their top 10 favourite musicals. Thus, the expectation is higher than your average show. Succeed, and you have a hit on your hands. Fail, and there would be outroar in the streets! Luckily, this production falls in the former.

EVENT: Dolly Parton Presents 9 To 5: The Musical (2022)

Dolly Parton’s joyous smash hit musical first premiered in Los Angeles in September 2008 before making its Broadway debut in 2009. It later opened in the US (2010), UK (2012 and 2019) and now, it’s Melbourne’s turn – now playing at the State Theatre, Art Centre. 

The musical is based on the 1980 comedy film of the same name, which is the perfect source material for this kind of show. Although it has over-the-top wacky hijinks like many films of that decade, its themes and relatability as well as smart casting is where the musical excels.

EVENT: Girl From The North Country Musical (2022)

 

Melbourne is offering a smorgasbord of musicals at the moment and currently on at the Comedy Theatre is the little mentioned Girl From The North Country.  We managed $35 rush tickets on June 7 and were seated in the second row in an almost half full theatre (granted, though, it was its final week, and also a Tuesday, which may or may not have had something to do with it).

EVENT: Dirty Dancing, the Musical

 

I had the pleasure of attending the Opening Night of Dirty Dancing in Melbourne this past Thursday night. This included the Media Launch (preview performance for photo/video ops, interviews etc) in the morning, followed by the Pink Carpet Arrivals that afternoon and the show that evening. 

I will be doing a write up of some interesting bits and pieces from the Media Launch, but first, here is my little write up of my thoughts and feelings towards the show =D Under the cut, of course!

INTERVIEW: Lachlan Martin from Strictly Ballroom the Musical

AN INTERVIEW WITH

Lachlan Martin

Adelaide-born Lachlan Martin is currently starring as Clarry Welch in the Australian production of Strictly Ballroom the Musical. I spoke to Lachlan about working with Baz Luhrmann, wigs and Banana royalty. 

So, tell the people a little bit about yourself to start with.
      I'm Adelaide born and bred. It was an amazing place to grow up. I was drawn to the Performing Arts from an early age. I went to an Arts-based high school and loved immersing myself in things like the music program, Rock Eisteddfod and Drama. I moved to Ballarat to study a Music Theatre degree at the University of Ballarat Arts Academy.
    It was the perfect University for me - super creative and tucked away from the world, so we were forced to focus and work! I went hard my first year out and worked on nine shows, I think. Some were professional and others were for experience. I just wanted to keep driven and inspired. I played with different styles of theatre, dabbled with directing ... I could go on forever but you probably don't need my life story [laughs].
