Low/No Buy Year: April 2026

I wish this whole month was an April Fool's Joke! It's a BIG one!

> What I Bought:

I've been in a bit of a style rut lately. I know what I like and what I want but little I own fits me and I find it so difficult to find pieces I like, especially within my limited budget. So, I've been trying to hit up different thrift stores and see what I can find. I even contacted someone on Etsy who does curated thrifted mystery boxes. I explained my style and sent a detailed Pinterest board. I didn't pay anything, but we agreed that she'd check out some local stores and see if she could find what I was looking for first. But it ended up being an absolute disaster! I don't know if she just didn't get my style or if stores were lacking, but I'm glad I didn't order one.

But if you read my article, Can I Thrift Better For Myself Than A Paid Stylist? you would already know that I spent a bit on thrifting this month. I bought 6 clothing items and two pairs of boots for $50.05, plus 3 DVDs for $4.98. During other trips, I got a dress ($4), blazer ($28 - which is criminal, but it was new with tags and retails for $160 so I guess that's okay), replacement jacket ($19), shirt ($4), skort ($9) and skirt ($7). And I bought three things on Depop - a tartan coat ($35), plaid top ($12.80) and a pair of earrings (ala Lunaya Jewelry) for $10.

Don't let me go thrifting again this year - unless I really need something. Although I probably will but I want to stick to more of a budget as recent thrifting has been more about finding clothes that actually fit me as I desperately needed them! My goal moving forward is to not spend over $5 per item unless on a truly special piece. I have also turned the special price notification emails off on my Depop so I won't be tempted.

I also bought a clock for $164 (down from $205) that I have wanted for more than a year - literally - I can check my emails going back asking the company about it. It's possible I could have gotten it for even cheaper had I waited but I've only ever seen it for $280 with delivery so I saved $100+ buying it from End Clothing instead.

And then I bought some new clothes... I'm kinda ashamed. But again, a rut, I knew I wouldn't be able to thrift the pieces and the world is going to sh*t with delivery changes through the roof so it's now or never really for online purchases for me. That was my justification anyway. I will go back to thrifting from now on with specific needs. I bought an embellished coat ($122 down from $326) and a top ($28 down from $69) from Ivy City for an event.

Total: $497.83

I went to the cinema for The Deb (gifted) and The Drama (gifted).

> What I Learnt:

Remember I spoke about that five-month crack where I go nuts and spend a bunch after doing so well? Well, I'm a little late, but I guess I finally reached that point... as the last time was October 2025. I could say that at least the majority of items were second hand or thought about for a long time, but there's really no excuse for the number of items I bought. I got lucky with thrifted items though compared to usual. That's both good and bad, but I did need clothing as, again, not a lot fits me at the moment, so that was a blessing, nonetheless.

But I'm feeling very overwhelmed by the number of items I've recently brought into my life. Being a former hoarder turned wannabee minimalist I try to keep items at a minimum, and I feel like I've completely fallen into old ways. It's all in my head though as everything I've bought has a place, as in I don't have clutter stacking up around me (even those in storage like the Christmas decorations). But I now have outfits I can play with again!

I was watching a YouTuber who spoke about thrifting a similar item when wanting to find something specific. Like you might set out to find a black blazer with 3/4 sleeves and come away with one with full length sleeves because it's "okay" or "might do" for the meantime. But then you continue that search for a better and/or perfect one anyway making that originally purchase not a great one. It's so easy to do and I want to avoid that.

The items on my thrift wishlist include a blackwatch tartan scarf, pink sequin knee length skirt, replacement shearling jacket in black on black, dusty blue jumper, orange chunky cardigan and black studded skirt.

> Temptations:

was tempted to buy another pair of Irregular Choice shoes because there was a massive sale, bringing down a pair of tartan heels to $69. But I know in my heart I don't need them/wouldn't get the wear they deserve.

I've been really wanting to get a thrifted mystery box because again, style rut. I did like some pieces from Karen Millen (but they were too expensive, though a great bargain) as well as some jackets on Depop

I've been wanting to replace my black-on-black shearling jacket for ages as it's definitely a tad ratty, though I continue wearing it anyway. There's a beige-on-black one on Depop in my size. However, I bought the same at an op shop last year or the year before and still haven't worn it. I thought it might be because it's a bit snug, but I do think the beige just doesn't match my wardrobe. So, I'll continue searching for an all-black one instead.

I REALLY want a specific record. I can get it on eBay for just over $58 and I have $50 voucher but I'm trying so hard not to spend it, even though I originally wanted to spend it on the Westlife Greatest Hits record haha.

> So Far:

Let's continue this (striking through essentials/needs) ... things bought so far:

  • Christmas decorations x4 ($0.10)
  • Keanu Reeves book ($3.50)
  • Earrings x2 ($15)
  • Boots x2 ($24)
  • Clothing x16 ($320.85)
  • DVDs x5 ($4.98)
  • Moisuriser ($23.40)
  • Frames x4 ($620.44)
  • Bag ($30)
  • Art ($75)
  • Clock ($164)

Total: $637.43

Okay yeah, so, I've totally blown it this year, although still down from last year which is good. I totally blame my style rut and life in general just being very difficult at the moment. $320.85 for 16 pieces of clothes is insane to me - even though it works out to be just over $20 per piece which is good, but yeah, I'm going to avoid thrift stores and shopping in general moving forward.
