Low Buy Year: May 2025

On the first of the month, I was hit with an unexpected driver's license renewel reminder. At first, I thought it was a scam, but I checked my license and it was due to expire in June, so that was a big chunk of change spent on the 1st, along with the final second artwork payment. So, I started (and ended) May money poor...

> What I Bought:

Firstly, I paid off the second artwork ($4500) across four long months. I will be able to pick it up in October or November. I have one more artwork to pay off (the very first artwork) sometime in June (TBA).

I also put some purchases on zip pay last month, so I paid those off at the start of May. I ended up buying Jenny Mitchell's vinyl record ($54.99) - I wanted to support her and I got a good discount on it too, so that was my justification. I bought some theatre tickets for my sister and I ($83.50), theatre tickets for myself ($178), printing at Officeworks ($24) and three bottles of peach schnapps ($100). I know I said at the beginning of the year that I was trying not to buy alcohol, but these were on sale. They retail for $52 each on average and I got them for $33 each, which I consider/ed a bargain. They're my favourite and now I've stocked up for what I imagine will be some many years to come as I hardly ever drink. No regrets... except the $400+ zip pay bill.

Williams had 30% off so I decided to buy the Fringle Cognac Ankle Boots by I Love Billy ($69.96) with my taste test gift card as a replacement pair of boots because (and I think I've mentioned this before) but my tan boots are breaking. I wore them two days after I bought them and have continued since.

That same day, to my surprise, I saw a new John Wick pop vinyl ($23) at Zing. I don't tend to buy them anymore except when they are related to Keanu Reeves, so I didn't even hesitate.

I then bought a hoodie when I saw Hadestown ($110). I also bought a crystal bird showpiece because I've wanted one since I can remember. I ended up going with a smaller one than I thought I would. It's very unique (emerald with clear quartz) and I adore it. It retailed for $425, and the kind shop lady let me have it for $375.

The day I saw Jesus Christ Superstar, I knew I wanted to go to the Rose Street Market and buy a slug with teeth. I spoke about it last month and I finally decided it was time. When I got there, there were no slugs with teeth, so I ended up buying a smaller non-teeth slug for $20. Additionally, I bought a small plate from the Monopoly Cafe because it was on sale for $5.95. I had wanted to get one back in December when we went to the high tea, but it was full price so didn't. I had been wanting to get both since last year, so they weren't impulsive at least. Especially having gone to the city early just so I could potentially buy both. The main point I am making is that while I probably shouldn't have bought either - at least I thought long and hard about them haha.

Total: $5088.94 ($2088.94 if you don't include the total art amount or $533.95 sans art)

I went to the theatre for Hadestown (free ticket and programme), The Lord of the Rings: A Musical Tale ($89^ ticket and $22 programme), Footloose ($89 ticket^ and $25 programme), Les Misérables: The Arena Spectacular (free ticket and programme), Jesus Christ Superstar ($89 ticket^ and free programme), Beetlejuice ($50 rush ticket and $30 programme) and Nice Work If You Can Get It ($58 ticket and $10 programme).

I went to cinema for Bonnie and Clyde: The Musical ($25*) and drive-in for Mission Impossible ($19^).

* I used one of my taste test gift vouchers ^ I used zip pay

> Temptations:

I went to Savers and found a gorgeous ceramic cat. I think it's vintage, at least I've seen them sold by resellers online. But I couldn't justify its $18 price tag, and I wouldn't want to buy just to resell. I also almost bought a crystal lamp on the same day - it was citrine, like my other one - but I sadly walked away.

And, of course, more art temptations because that's the norm, I guess lol. Oh, and a new book, but like in my rules, no new books until I read the others OR I get it from the library.

I went on Middle of Beyond as I adore their stuff and they were having a big warehouse sale, and I wanted their Killer Klown from Outer Space hoodie blanket thing. Do I want three? No. But do I want this one? Yes.

Mid-May I finally checked out Panda Mart - the new discount retailer warehouse (described as a Temu-type store) located in Cranbourne. I loved a large, ceramic vase that was around $150. Had I not bought the vase in February, I might have bought it. I might still. But I ended up spending $1.10 total on toothbrushes instead.

Again, at the Rose Street Market, I liked a crocodile ceramic at Plants of Colour. I'd bought from them previously, but I couldn't justify paying $100 for it. Nor do I need it. Nor had I thought about it long.

> What I Learnt:

Previously if I liked an item of clothing, I would stop wearing it as I didn't want to ruin it. For example, I have many favourite t-shirts but when you wear them too much, they get that worn smell to them. I'm never sure what to call it, it's common in vintage tees though where it's been washed and worn so many times that it has a smell to it. And if you don't know what I'm talking about, you haven't worn your t-shirts in enough to know :/

But my mind has shifted over the past month and last. Now I want to wear those favourite pieces because they deserve to be worn, even if it ends their life cycle. There is no point keeping clothes you like as show pieces. Now, I'm not talking sentimental or special occasion clothing, I'm talking everyday wearable pieces.

Clearly, I also went a little buy crazy this month and spent more than I ought to. Zip pay has been a god send to me though as, even though I could afford things now, I've been able to delay payments. I've watched many videos about people who are going into debt for using Buy Now, Pay Later services but I make sure to budget in those costs before buying anything. I write many lists and budget accordingly. I will make some purchases using zip pay on the first of June to pay off at the end of July, and those should be my final ones for a while.

Until next time! x
