Low/No Buy Year: May 2026

I almost forgot to do a cut!

> What I Bought:

I bought the Leaf of Lorien necklace from EB Games ($29.50). There was a half-price sale, but I had wanted it when it was full price and thought it was going to be perfect to wear to Lord of the Rings trivia that weekend. And it was. We came fourth, by the way, by some miracle considering I was the only one who answered any questions on our "team", and I made many stupid mistakes forgetting information and not having time to watch the extended editions. But it's a lot of information to cram into your head over a busy weekend haha.

I also bought a pair of earrings ($25.99) from a random shop in the city. I'd been looking at replacements I can wear in my ears all the time to stop them from closing over, and I finally found some - long time coming!

I was at Chadstone one night and discovered CJ Hendry's pop-up flower shop. It was unfortunately closed so I went back the next day. It was the worst public transport day of my life (!!) and all the good stuff I wanted had sold out, but (even though I gave myself a $60 limit), I ended up buying three purple flowers for $30.

Total: $85.49

I went to the theatre for Freaky Friday: The Musical ($50 ticket/$8.20 print), Waitress: The Musical (free ticket/programme), Company (free ticket/$7 programme), The Magic Pudding: The Opera (free ticket/no programme), Gilbert & Sullivan: A Musical Celebration ($5 ticket/free programme), Encore! Songs from the Musicals ($55 ticket/no programme) and The Hunchback of Notre Dame ($59 ticket/$10 programme).

> What I Learnt:

It's so funny to me because now I go thrifting and I can't bring myself to spend $10, $15, more, on anything. The local op shop near me where all clothing is under $6 has ruined my shopping experience, because why pay $15 for an average jumper when I could pay $4 for it?! That being said, it is a very small op shop and that first time I got extremely lucky finding pieces I liked (see Can I Thrift Better For Myself Than A Paid Stylist?). There have been many times since where I've found nothing so, like every other op shop, luck varies. That is not to say that I won't ever spend more than $10 on a piece but I'll definitely consider cost-per-wear and if it's worth the price.

I'm going to be moving in a couple of months so naturally I've been going through my things and I'm so proud of myself for being content with what I own. Yes, I still have more than I probably need but everything has a place or is put away. I'm not surrounded by clutter. I have enough. And maybe when I do move, I will get rid of some things if I don't have the space for it but for the moment, and as a former hoarder, I'm proud of myself.

> Temptations:

was tempted by more art but it's very expensive and I have no room for it. I definitely was tempted by more than one piece of art as the month went on, as well as more CJ Hendry flowers. There are plenty selling online that had already sold out by the time I got to Chadstone but naturally at an inflated price.

^ funny enough a couple of days after buying mine and looking online at buying more, I was then contemplating selling mine (and a lot of other stuff I own) as I need the money for my citizenship. I haven't though haha.

I was tempted to go to the Big Design Market, line up for two hours before it opened and buy a showbag because it sounded amazing! But then I thought how ridiculous that whole idea was and decided to stay in bed instead. Later I found out someone working there could have gotten me one, so I have regrets, as well as relief. I may have bought some other things at that market too, so I'm kinda glad I didn't end up going in the end.

> So Far:

Let's continue this (striking through essentials/needs) ... things bought so far:

  • Christmas decorations x4 ($0.10)
  • Keanu Reeves book ($3.50)
  • Earrings x3 ($40.99)
  • Necklace ($29.50)
  • Boots x2 ($24)
  • Clothing x16 ($320.85)
  • DVDs x5 ($4.98)
  • Moisuriser ($23.40)
  • Frames x4 ($620.44)
  • Bag ($30)
  • Art x4 ($105)
  • Clock ($164)

Total: $722.92

If you remove the clothing, boots, bag and jewellery, it totals $277.58, which is incredible! That's pretty low, all things considered. I did say that I needed new clothing and some new accessories for events, so not terrible!
